Prayers are part of every religion. And every religion has its god or gods to whom they are addressed. Buddhism seems to be similar. Anyone who has ever visited a monastery in Nepal, or perhaps a Buddhist temple in Thailand, has certainly seen many visitors there saying prayers with folded hands to statues or other shrines. We also find objects labeled with terms such as prayer chain, prayer wheel or prayer flag.

To whom are prayers addressed in Buddhism and what is prayed for?

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has often emphasized the following: ”Simply praying for something to change is not enough; there must also be an action.”

Nevertheless, in Buddhism we pray for inspiration and strength – to be able to work on ourselves, to be able to create the causes for happiness ourselves.
