One does not need to be a Buddhist to join this course; it is suitable for those who are relatively new and wish to better understand the foundations of Buddhist practice, as well as for more experienced students who want to deepen or refine their relationship to the path.

About This Course

What does it mean to rely on a spiritual teacher? Why is such a relationship considered essential on the path to awakening?

In this module, we will explore the profound role of the spiritual teacher (guru) within the Buddhist tradition. You will investigate why guidance is needed, the qualities to look for in a qualified teacher, and the responsibilities and attitudes of a sincere student.

Through teachings, reflection, and discussion, you will gain clarity on how to approach this relationship in a grounded, intelligent, and healthy way—free from blind faith, yet open to genuine transformation.

Drawing on classical Lamrim teachings, this module presents the teacher-student relationship as a powerful support for inner development. When approached with wisdom, it becomes a source of inspiration, direction, and deep personal growth.

We will also explore how to cultivate discernment, trust, and respect, and how to integrate the teacher’s guidance into daily life in a practical and meaningful way.

This is the fourth in a series of 14 modules covering the complete Buddhist path to enlightenment. Students may join at any point in the cycle. Discovering Buddhism is designed for those who wish to deepen their understanding of fundamental Buddhist concepts while gaining practical tools for inner transformation.

Each module includes teachings, meditations, readings, and assessment questions. A short retreat is offered throughout the program.
